Thursday, November 12th, 2015. BMG: The People’s United Party held its executive meeting yesterday afternoon to discuss a national convention, in which a new leader will be elected for the party since Francis Fonseca announced he will be stepping down from the post.
When that meeting concluded, members of the party spoke to the media, including its chairman, Henry Usher, who said that the date of the convention has been set for January 31, 2016 and deadline for nominations was set at December 15 of this year, for the open post and the delegates.
A venue for the convention has not been decided upon as yet but Usher mentioned that Fonseca will continue to act as leader in the House of Representatives and it is expected that a smooth transition will occur once a new leader is elected next year.
Newly elected Caribbean Shores Representative, Kareem Musa, also spoke to the media and did not reject the idea of running for the leadership role, but certainly didn’t say whether he would be vying for it on January 31st either.
The same could be said about Julius Espat’s interview with the media, as he basically beat around the bush and gave no hint of his intentions for the position, if he indeed has any. Espat did say though, that he will support and work with anyone who is elected as the new party leader.
John Briceno initially denied an interview with the media but later spoke to his CTV-3 News in Orange Walk and said that he is seriously considering it and that it is something he will probably do. He further stated that he has the support all across this country and has been receiving calls from people telling him that it is his responsibility as a senior member of the party to lead again.
