Friday, November 27th, 2015. BMG: People’s United Party Senator Lisa Shoman made disturbing allegations regarding the case involving wanted American fugitive David Nanes Schnitzer late Friday afternoon.
“Some critical information about the Banes/Nanes Schnitzer affair has just been shared with me, and deserves to be made public,” she said in a Facebook post.
According to Shoman, in May of 2015, the Mexican Embassy requested via diplomatic note, to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belize, the extradition of Schnitzer and have been requesting the cooperation of Belizean officials in this matter.
Mexico and Belize have an Extradition Treaty in force since 1989, however, there has been an absence in collaboration with Mexican officials on this case, she alleged.
“There has been no compliance with the said Treaty in the case of Nanes Schnitzer, nor was he deported and handed over to Mexican Authorities once his Belizean citizenshp was revoked and his Belizean passport cancelled due to fraud and misrepresentation,” she went on to say.
Reportedly, the Mexican fugitive was captured and held not by Belizean authorities, but US Marshalls in San Pedro.
Mexican authorities had already formally requested the return of Nanes Schnitzer to Mexico. It is not certain whether the Judge was apprised of this fact by Crown Counsel, but it would have and should have been a factor in assessing flight risk, she said.
Mexican authorities are reportedly very unhappy that Nanes was granted bail on a relatively minor offence, when they had already officially requested months ago that he be turned over to them.
Apparently, a diplomatic note of protest will be sent within in few days to complain of Belize’s failure to cooperate in accordance to the international law since Belizean authorities were informed well in advance on the importance of this prisioner and did nothing to comply with the request, she said.
Shoman describe the debacle as another international black eye saying “this time, we have failed our closest neighbors and friends.”
