Wednesday, December 2nd, 2015. BMG: Reports surfacing on Facebook and in Mexican Newspapers are that Belizean shoppers are being targeted while shopping in Chetumal, even more so now that the Christmas season is near and everyone is looking for ways to get some extra cash.
It is said that thieves have been lurking like sharks and stealing wallets or bags of Belizean shoppers by creating distractions then stealing the items without shoppers even being aware.
Specific places noted as hotspots for the thieves are commercial centers such as Sams or Walmart and Plaza de Las Americas mall.
These reports have been confirmed by Mexican authorities in Quintana Roo who urge Belizean shoppers to be cautious and keep their belongings close at all times, so as to not lose cash or credit cards to these professional thieves.
Many persons have posted on the “Belize Buy and Sell” Facebook page to warn others about the incidents happening in Chetumal and about the lack of interest from Mexican police. It is expected now that officers from that area will be more vigilant since these reports have garnered so much attention.
