armed robbery bannerBy Chrisbert Garcia: Preliminary reports from Belize District Police indicate that a group of eight robbers hit the burglary jackpot in the wee hours of this morning when they broke into the residence of the Honorary Consul to Lebanon, Sarkis Abou Nehra, in Burrell Boom Village.

Police responded to the scene around 5:00 a.m. and upon arrival, the caretaker of the premises told officers that between the hours of 8:00 p.m. last night and 3:00 a.m., the masked bandits held him and his spouse at gunpoint, tied him up, then proceeded to steal items and cash to a total value in the tens of thousands.

The thieves ransacked the entire residence, stealing two 9mm pistols, a 12 gauge shotgun, a .22 rifle, an assortment of expensive jewelry, $10,000 in Belizean currency and an additional $1,500 in American currency. The crooks then sexually assaulted the caretaker’s spouse before making good their escape in a silver Mercedes Benz car with consular license plate, which they also stole.

So far, the Mercedes Benz has been found abandoned on Saint Joseph Street in Belize City but the robbers are still at large and police investigations continue.
