By Aaron Humes: Guatemalan judge Hector Trujillo was arrested by U.S. federal agents on Friday on board a Disney cruise ship in Florida. He is one of many football officials charged by U.S. prosecutors investigating corruption in football’s world governing body, FIFA.
According to Reuters news agency, FIFA is in the throes of an unprecedented crisis with criminal investigations into the sport under way in the United States and Switzerland. Its president Sepp Blatter is among officials who have been suspended by its own ethics committee.
At FIFA headquarters in Zurich on Friday, FIFA executive committee members Juan Angel Napout of Paraguay, head of South American confederation CONMEBOL, and Alfredo Hawit of Honduras, who currently leads the North American body CONCACAF, were suspended from football for 90 days after their arrests at a hotel in the city on Thursday morning.
