New Cane crop 03

By Dalila Ical. The 2015/2016 sugar crop commenced today and the BSI factory began receiving deliveries at 10:00 in the morning.

All the scheduling for deliveries has been set in place but this morning the process was slow due to bad weather, however, the pace picked up after midday. The season is projected to run for 27 weeks.

The factory will be receiving an approximate 7,000 tons of sugar cane per day and it is projected that the factory will mill 1.316 million tons of sugar cane by the end of the 27 weeks.

BSI held a tour of the factory facilities with stakeholders and the media this morning to showcase the improvements that have been done. This includes a new ramp and software installed to help control the flow of deliveries, speeding up the discharging of vehicles. It should also prevent any jams in the process.

Chair of the Sugar Cane Production Committee, Jose Novelo says that the only thing that could hinder the flow of deliveries is the weather as all stakeholders are starting the new crop in a “sense of good cooperation”.

This year the farmers have produced an estimated 1.6 million tons of sugar cane, the highest ever achieved. Last year the production stood at 1.4 million tons.  The bulk of the production is held by the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association (BSCFA), which also holds the largest membership.

Towards the start of the crop, there was slight movement of membership from the BSCFA to, primarily, to the Corozal Sugar Cane Production Committee.
