By Aaron Humes: A pair of traffic accidents were reported on both major highways in the Belize District on Thursday afternoon and earlier today.
Around 1:30 in the afternoon on Thursday, the white Ford Ranger pickup being driven by Ranchito, Corozal resident Fernando Chan and carrying ten other persons, suffered a rear tire blowout and he lost control of it between Miles 34 and 35 on the Philip Goldson Highway.
The vehicle overturned and all eleven persons traveling in it including Chan suffered injuries. Police from Ladyville and Orange Walk responded as well as two BERT ambulances. Six persons with lesser injuries were taken to the Northern Regional Hospital while the remainder were brought to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City.
One of the entrants to the Northern Regional was later rushed to the KHMH with two broken ribs. Police investigations continue.
Meanwhile, there was an accident at Mile 26 on the George Price Highway, which ironically involved an employee of the Road Safety Project. Franz Schmitt of Burrell Boom was working on the highway marking but there was no cones or sign indicating such work and as a result a red pickup truck being driven by Lloyd Monroe of Belize City apparently came upon the scene quickly and lost control, landing in a ditch. Neither man was injured.
