By Delilah Ical: Recent aggression towards older persons in Belize has prompted the National Council of Aging to issue a press release condemning the issue.
The most recent is the attack of a 93-year-old man in Belize City and the release notes that since October reports of violent crimes against older persons across the country have been surfacing causing “shock and disbelief among our citizens”.
The Council states that as the population of older persons grows it calls on Belizeans to take an active interest in these individuals by ensuring they are members of an older persons organization including “church groups, Help Age, and Voice”.
People can try to establish neighborly relationships with the elderly and also report suspicious activity in their area as older persons are vulnerable as proven by the recent attack against one.
Older persons are also encouraged to get close to family and friends who can provide shelter and support. In closing, the Council asks authorities to keep working diligently to ensure justice is served on those who victimize older people.
