By Aaron Humes: On Friday our colleagues at KREM Radio and Television will host the 26th New Year’s Day Cycling Classic from Belize’s Northern Border to the Central American Boulevard at its Junction with Mahogany Street in Belize City.
So far, 65 Elite riders have registered for the 90-mile race.
The dynamics this year will be different making for an exciting race to follow. Race promoter Kwame Scott told us that beginning this year, no Belizean teams will be allowed to have foreigners race with them – they will have to win all on their own.
Last year’s Elite winner was Mexican Hector Rangel riding for Team Benny’s Megabytes and there are several to watch this year, including defending Cross Country champion, Belizean-American Justin Williams, who made the bold decision to ride alone without a team.
What about the prizes? There are the usual five thousand-dollar prizes scattered through out the race and many other riches, including a $2,500 first place prize at the finish.
The Elite riders kick off at 9a.m. from the Belize-Mexico border, the juniors leave from in front of the Orange Walk Town Board while the women depart 5 minutes later.
