By Aaron Humes: The Amandala newspaper has named Senior Superintendent of Police Chester Williams as its Man of the Year for his work in reducing crime, especially murder, on the Southside of Belize City in the second half of 2015.Chester williams sept.14

Since he took office in July in a triumvirate with ACP Desiree Phillips on Northside and Sr. Supt. Edward Broaster in the Rural division, crime generally has been down, but especially on Southside, where there was just eight murders reported in the last six months up to today.

He was suitably humble when we caught up with him today during the final “Meet and Greet”, a program he initiated in 2015, in downtown on Albert Street.

Senior Superintendent Williams chose to pay tribute to the rest of his management team and the businesses who have assisted the Department in its programs over the last six months as well as welcomed his officers to their premises as part of the Meet and Greet. But he saved his warmest congratulations for three special groups of people: the gang mediators, the residents of his division, and the press.

Williams’ next task is to achieve sustainability, which even Amandala admits is easier said than done. But the senior officer says he will continue his task with zeal, and asks the community and especially skeptics to join in.

Williams this year also became a trained attorney, being called to the Bar in November.
