By Chrisbert Garcia: The Belize Energy Workers Union (BEWU) issued a press release yesterday afternoon stating its position and giving its opinions on the matter of Jack Charles’ imported Guyanese rice being considered for destruction after he lost his plea to the courts.
In the release, BEWU calls on the Government of Belize to reconsider its decision to destroy the massive amount of rice, which is now in the custody of the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) after Charles attempted to import the product into Belize without proper permits.
The BEWU said no wise government would destroy food which could be placed to better use, after BAHA has ensured that it is safe to be consumed and adds that the international community would frown upon us for wasting good food instead of donating it to organizations countrywide that help to feed children, the elderly and poor, or school feeding programs.
BEWU ended the release by stating that it believes in fairness to all concerned, and that Charles should be at least compensated for the cost price of his rice.
