Belize chairs CARICOM secretariat

Wilfred ElrigtonBy Aaron Humes: Belize on January 1st took over the chairmanship of the CARICOM secretariat under Prime Minister Dean Barrow. CARICOM Secretary General Irwin Larocque is in Belize for the Intersessional Meeting of heads of Government to be held here on January 16 and 17.

Secretary General LaRocque met with the Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Wilfred Elrington to outline plans for the meeting and Belize’s chairmanship. P.M. Barrow has also indicated his support for more Caribbean nations to join Belize, Guyana, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean Court of Justice’s (CCJ) appellate jurisdiction.

Belize will hold the chairmanship for the next six months.
