Saturday, July 4th, 2015. BMG: An initiative established several years ago has changed the collection and disposal of garbage from across the central corridor of Belize – the islands, Belize City, Belmopan and San Ignacio.
The Belize Solid Waste Management Authority has overseen the construction of multiple transfer stations where garbage is collected and sorted to remove recyclable and other materials before being taken to a sanitary landfill at Mile 24 on the George Price Highway.
On Friday, Minister of Natural Resources Gaspar Vega officially opened the fourth of five components of the project which is sponsored by the Inter-American Development Bank and Organization for Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), with the Government providing counterpart funding.
The San Pedro Transfer Station is expected to be the first stop for garbage from the island; its counterpart on Caye Caulker is in its final stages of completion.
The garbage of the islands is transported via barge currently to Belize City for sorting and disposal, now that is expected to take place on the island and only the unsorted garbage will be brought in.
