By Aaron Humes: Tonight, Calvin Cumberbatch, the husband of Pamela Bennett, a money lender who tragically lost her life two days into the New Year in a traffic accident between Miles 5 and 6 on the Philip Goldson Highway was arraigned on manslaughter by negligence charges for the deaths of his wife and another driver Alfredo Perferio Navarette.
He was additionally charged with two counts of causing death by careless conduct and one count of driving a motor vehicle without due care and attention and a sixth count of fail to keep as close as possible to the right hand side of the road between Miles 5 and 6 when driving a white Toyota Tundra pickup truck.
In court, Cumberbatch was represented by attorney, Audrey Matura Shepherd, who was surprised that her client faced charges despite still recovering from his own injuries in the accident. He had to sit down in court to be read the charges by Magistrate Carlon Mendoza as he still has difficulty standing and sitting on his own.
The charges are to be tried on indictment at the Supreme Court and therefore no plea was taken; however he was granted and met bail of $5,000.
Cumberbatch is due back in court on April 18, 2016, at which time he will be given disclosure and set a date for preliminary inquiry to determine whether he will be tried.
He was released on a bail of $5,000 and his case was adjourned until April 18. Cumber batch was driving a white Toyota pick-up truck when it collided with a Dodge Caravan between miles 5 and 6 on Phillip Goldson Highway. Cumberbatch’s wife, Pamela, who was seated beside him, was killed. So was Alfredo Navarette, the driver of the Dodge Caravan. The accident occurred on January 3. Cumberbatch’s right hand was broken in several places.
