By BMG Staff: In the race for party leader of the People’s United Party, Johnny Briceno has triumphed over rivals Francis Fonseca and Cordel Hyde, returning to leadership of the party he stepped away from five years ago.
Like his rival Hyde, Briceno has been preaching a return to winning ways and social justice for the PUP, countering the message of continuation espoused by Fonseca.
Briceno has long had a strong base in Orange Walk, where he has served as area representative since 1993, and a familiar face in politics, with reformist credentials from the G-7 faction in 2004 of which Hyde was also a part.
It is not yet clear if Fonseca intends to step down as promised at the end of his current term as Freetown area representative. He has kept a low profile during campaigning, giving only one major interview following the observation of late leader and National Hero George Price’s birthday on January 15.
Turnout for today’s Special National Convention of the People’s United Party (PUP) is 2,758 delegates.
