By Chrisbert Garcia: While conducting a vehicle checkpoint before dawn yesterday morning, Belmopan police made one of the biggest drug busts in recent memory, seizing just over 30 pounds of weed that was inside a storage container and luggage bag thrown from a fleeing vehicle.
Around 4:30 a.m., officers at the checkpoint in Camalote Village, Cayo District, saw a vehicle that was heading in the direction of Belmopan, make a ‘U’ turn upon sight of them and instantly pursued it. During the chase, a backseat passenger of the vehicle threw out a large storage container and a luggage bag, which were later retrieved by police.
Police managed to stop the vehicle, finding two occupants inside, 21-year-old Travis Sutherland of Georgeville and 48-year-old Anthony August of Santa Elena, and took them to the area where the items were thrown. The container and bag was opened in their presence and cannabis amounting to a total of 14,531 grams (30.01 pounds) was found inside.
Both men were arrested and charged for the offense of ‘drug trafficking’.
