By Aaron Humes: Sentencing for 64 year old naturalized Belizean Estela Gonzalez, found guilty last week of human trafficking has been delayed until Tuesday, February 23. 
Today the court heard a plea for mitigation from Gonzalez who said that she was sorry for what she did but she did not know that having females was a problem.
She also that she was sick and asked the court to consider that prison was not conducive to her health. She said she has to take at least 10 pills each day for her various illnesses.
Dr. Fernando Cuellar testified that he has been treating her from 2012 for diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and urinary tract infection. He also said that she has developed long term complications the illnesses in the form of heart disease, eye disease and to a lesser extent, kidney disease. He said that if not cared for appropriately these conditions will deteriorate rapidly.
Another doctor, Dr. Javier Novelo, testified that he has been treating Gonzalez at prison for anxiety attacks, chronic diabetes and chronic high blood pressure. Two more witnesses, Anna Mossiah and Esperanza Requena, testified to Gonzalez’s good character.
Attorney Leo Bradley was assisted on his plea by Senior Counsel Ellis Arnold. The Director of Public Prosecutions, Cheryl-Lynn Vidal, represented the Crown.
