A protest there today caused significant delays for Belizeans and travellers heading to Belize.

Breaking Belize News understands that Belizeans are still stranded at this time.

Residents were dissatisfied after the Government ignored their petitions to remove a recently installed checkpoint on the highway at the entrance of the Navy office (the Secretaria de Marina).

BBN has been reliably informed that the checkpoint was set up to screen people passing through for weapons since a couple weeks ago.

However, travelers were required to wait in lines for up to two hours to be searched causing unwanted delays.

Members of the Subteniente Lopez community decided to protest and close the road.

They are especially concerned that the check point had appeared to deter visitors from coming into the community and consequently has caused significant economic losses there.
