By Aaron Humes: Youth worker and media commentator Nuri Muhammad today presented his Insights into Gang Culture in Belize: Essays on Youth, Crime and Violence.
It is his first-hand experience of working with a vulnerable segment of the population, which has evolved over a generation to something approaching organized bloodletting.
Muhammad told us that he seeks to understand why the gang has in some cases taken over for the nuclear family, especially on Belize City’s Southside, and why the culture persists.
He also hopes to have authorities stop reinventing the wheel every few years to solve a problem which has not fundamentally changed.
Succesive gang truces and programs have not held, resulting in frequent flare-ups of violence. Many lives have been lost due to gang violence in Belize and particularly Belize City in a generation.
