By BBN Staff: During a patrol about 600 meters away from the Belize-Guatemala border on Thursday of last week, members of the Belize Defense Force (BDF) along with Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD) personnel, came across a marijuana plantation measuring approximately 100 meters squared.
As the team approached the plants, a thatch shed was seen nearby and shots began to ring out from it, then a man was seen running with a firearm in his hand. The team returned fire and the fleeing man, later learned to be 51-year-old Francisco Torres Sucup of Peten Guatemala, was hit to the knee and captured.
A second man was then seen running with a 12 gauge shotgun and after being captured, was learned to be 56-year-old Luis Diaz Alballeros, also of Peten Guatemala. Their shed was then searched by the team, which found 15 shotgun cartridges and 24 live rounds of nine-millimeter ammunition that the men did not have a license for.
Sucup was then transported to the San Ignacio Town Hospital and later to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where he was admitted in a stable condition. Alballeros remains in police custody as investigations continue and Sucup is also under police watch at the hospital.
