court in sessionBy Dalila Ical: The murder trial for Osmer Sabido, accused of killing his common-law wife Christie Carrasco on February 28th, 2011 started today before Judge Herbert Lord.

The crown today called witnesses, Dyon Faber and Handa Cambranes to the stand. Cabranes gave her account of what transpired while taking the deceased to the hospital in the police vehicle but did not say she actually saw Sabido attack Carrasco. Faber on the other hand said that he saw Sabido at least once make a stabbing motion at Carrasco.

Sabido’s attorney, Oscar Selgado says Faber’s testimony aside, “it was only Dyon Faber’s eyewitness evidence that he saw Osmer Sabido stabbing the deceased once that is before the court. Everything else is circumstantial as to how she suffered the other three injuries.”

When the defense mounts its case, Selgado continued, it will show that while his client was at the scene of the incident “the defense of self-defense and provocation will arise. That he was in fact acting in self-defense. He was the person who was attacked and that in fact he was so provoked in those circumstances when he acted in self-defense that he lost control, temporary control of his entire emotions and his being”.

Sabido is accused of stabbing his common-law wife, Carrasco at least twice during a domestic dispute around 9:00 on the night of February 28th 2011 at the residence they shared in the San Lorenzo Housing Site in Orange Walk. Carrasco died shortly after arriving at the Northern Regional Hospital.

It has been five years that Sabido has been incarcerated, and his attorney, Selgado says it is “unacceptable for anyone to be locked up on mere allegations…(adding that the)…wheels of justice in Belize turns slow but I’m sure and that he will be given a fair trial.”

The Prosecution is represented by Javier Chan. Attorney Selgado says he expects the case to be closed on Monday.
