By Aaron Humes: The Belize Police Department’s largest division, Eastern Division, covers the nation’s largest municipality, and, at least until recently, its crime capital. In the teeth of the murder epidemic in 2015, now-Assistant Commissioner of Police Edward Broaster came up with the idea for an initiative called “BLACK” – Be Loving and Cease Killing.
The second annual march took place in Belize City today and we caught up with it at the BTL Park. Broaster, his counterpart on Southside ACP Chester Williams, and the Commander of Precinct 3 on Northside, Superintendent of Police Suzette Anderson say turnout exceeded all expectations and underlined that the electorate is tired of crime in all its forms.
The initiative was sponsored by multiple businesses and today’s activities included a release of balloons in honor of murder victims. A recent estimate suggested that more than 1,000 Belizeans have been killed in Belize City over the last 15 years, mostly due to gun and gang violence.
