By Beverly Vernon: Jamie Dominic Carbajal was born in San Ignacio. His friends and family call him “Kemba”. Growing up in one of the twin town, Carbajal went to Sacred Heart Primary School and then moved on to Sacred Heart High school where he started playing basketball.
At first he played just for fun but his love for the sport grew when he was in 2nd form. At age 14 Carbajal started playing on his first team. He played for E3 Light Rebirth in a U-18 Becol tournament. In 2011 and 2013 Carbajal along with his teammates represented Belize in Guatemala and Honduras.
He said the experience was amazing playing in the big stadiums while representing his country. He also explained that the level of competition was high but he enjoyed every bit.
Carbajal boosted his career by joining the Cayo Western Ballaz. He played 2 season as a shooting guard. Carbajal then decided to move on to his present team, the Belmopan Bandits and is quite happy with his decision. He was told he would be better playing as a point guard.
He took the advice and got to work, learning a lot from his teammates and opponents. Apart from playing ball, Carbajal is attending Sacred Heart Junior College. His goal is to finish his education and further on his studies.
He also wishes to continue playing basketball in Belize and look for opportunities to play in foreign countries. Carbajal’s message to the youths is to “Keep pushing, keep reaching you dreams. Nothing is impossible. It won’t be easy but believing in your dreams an have faith that God will look over you while you do what you are made to. Remember hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard.”
