By Aaron Humes: “Superdelegates” of the United Democratic Party – its many area representatives, Ministers, Senators, Mayors, Councilors and other big people – are quickly choosing sides in the coming battle for first deputy party leader between former chairman Patrick Faber and John Saldivar.
The party has not yet decided on the path forward, but today while we had the opportunity we asked Belize City Mayor and Caribbean Shores aspirant Darrell Bradley which of the aspirants he would support, and he said it’s Faber, with whom he has worked in the party’s youth arm, the Youth Popular Front, and who he said is a great supporter and “a brother” of his.
Faber already has the support of fellow Ministers Manuel Heredia and Michael Finnegan as well as ex-area rep Faith Babb and Senator Macario Coy; Saldivar has picked up the endorsements of second deputy Erwin Contreras and Minister of State Edmond Castro. Retiring deputy Gaspar Vega has been silent thus far on a successor and party leader and Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Dean Barrow has promised to be “scrupulously neutral”, though he praised Faber as the future of the party in 2013 after he lost to Vega for the post.
