By Aaron Humes: Popular opinion continues to be divided on the necessity and effectiveness of an announced initiative by Officer Commanding Eastern Division (South), Assistant Commissioner of Chester williams sept.14Police Chester Williams, to try to control the population of unaccompanied minors hanging on street corners and in some cases coerced to carry out crime including murder.

The Police have insisted that it should not be called a “curfew,” though most see it as acting that way.

Whichever it is, Minister of Human Development Hon. Anthony “Boots” Martinez is in full support. In fact, he told us today, there are other directions in which such a program could go which he would like to explore.

Minister Anthony MartinezThe Minister also called for a change in attitude in the community, stating that while policemen and women are agents of the law, they also play an equally important role as mentors, guardians, and even parents.

The initiative was announced by Williams in the wake of multiple arrests of teenagers for violent crimes in recent weeks, including at least two murders on Belize City’s Southside. After several months without a murder, the Southside saw three reported in a single week before the Easter holidays.
