By Aaron Humes: A release just before news time yesterday delivered some potentially devastating news for Belize.
The Ministry of Health informed that they had received communication from US health authorities indicating that a zika case in the US may have originated in Belize.
At the time, the Ministry, based on the CDC’s information, stated that the patient was an adult female who traveled to Belize between March 14 to 19 this year and that she tested positive for the virus four days later.
Today we learned that it was not only the woman who tested positive, but also her husband. Health CEO, Dr. Ramon Figueroa says that according to the information from the US, the couple did not travel elsewhere in the past 6 months.
For now, Figueroa advises Belizeans to increase preventive measures to eliminate the breeding sites for mosquitoes.
