By Aaron Humes: We were informed this afternoon that a meeting that was originally postponed took place in Benque Viejo Town today between Belize’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Hon. Wilfred Elrington and his Guatemalan counterpart, His Excellency Carlos Raul Morales.
While the exact details are not known, the recent incidents in the Sarstoon River involving rangers from SATIIM and the shooting of BDF Staff Sergeant Richard Lambey are likely to be high on the agenda.
We were not able to reach CEO in the Ministry Lawrence Sylvestre for an update before news time this evening. We will continue to follow these developments.
In related Belize-Guatemala news, this week, the CEO in the Ministry of National Security, Retired Colonel George Lovell, raise the developments at the Sarstoon with the Organization of American States Permanent council’s Committee of Hemispheric Security. The contribution was made during a conference via Skype.
As we shared previously, the Prime Minister has said that Belize will address the incident involving the Guatemalan Armed Forces and SATIIM through diplomatic channels.
