By Aaron Humes: For the latest installment of the Eastern Division Police Department’s weekly meet and greet in Belize City, police officers visited the upper reaches of the Albert and Mesopotamia Divisions, stretching from Orange Street to Regent Street West and centering on Taylor’s Alley.
That alley has become notorious for alleged criminal association and was the base for the late Arthur Young among others.
But Assistant Commissioner of Police Chester Williams told us this afternoon that like much of Southside, it has calmed down somewhat. To keep it that way, authorities are organizing a family day bringing together bitter rivals Taylor’s Alley and George Street among others.
In addition to the public relations aspects, do police on their visits obtain valuable information that helps them solve crimes? We put the question to Commissioner Williams and he said that while police do not actively solicit such information, they welcome it when they get it.
And in related news, the Police have been working hard to tamp down violent uprising following the deaths of Gerald “Shiny” Tillett of George Street and Keon “Gambis” Williams in recent weeks.
But beyond repeating that crime does not pay and that an eye for an eye leaves all blind, Williams says he has told grieving friends of the deceased that there is another way to honor their memory: he suggests they help their families to move forward and raise the many children both men left behind.
Of course, Williams also noted that Police will keep a sharp eye on and crack down – legally – on those that insist on committing crime for any reason.
