By Aaron Humes: Following a heated discussion, the Belize National Teacher’s Union (BNTU) has agreed to forgo its annual Teachers’ Day celebrations in favor of a rally as part of its ongoing “Stand up for Belize” campaign in Belize City.
The Union has also called for the S.I. on restrictions of travel in the Sarstoon to be rescinded immediately. If it is not, the Union will meet again to stake out its next course of action.
The rally, preceded by a parade, takes place in Belize City on Friday, May 13; an actual venue is to be determined. On the tri-annual schedule for the Union, this year the branches are in charge of organization.
The BNTU is also planning a series of information campaigns for its members on going to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the Guatemalan claim countrywide beginning on May 18.
Explaining the decision, president Luke Palacio said he hopes the Ministry of Education understands that teachers are fulfilling their duties to their children to help them to be proud of and love their country.
But he was also clear in saying that it made no sense to try to act rashly and “break up” the country.
