SHBy Aaron Humes: The staff of Scotia Bank partnered with Hand in Hand Ministries to build a new home this weekend for a Belize City resident and senior citizen, located at 6500 North Creek Road.

Recipient 76 year old Louise Henry is among the many persons in Belize City and along the coastline of Belize who last year suffered significant damage to their homes due to heavy storms and flooding problems.

Henry lives with her handicapped foster son Isaac, whom she has raised since he was two years old. In addition to painting the siding for her new home, she previously participated in the building of a house on Racoon Street Extension.SH1

Marketing manager Elio Cabanas said that Scotiabank’s contribution, not only to this house but another in Dangriga for Shantelle Lopez, a mother of three school-age children with a medical condition was to Hand in Hand and the Belize Red Cross for a total of 40 thousand dollars; each house cost about 18 thousand dollars.

Approximately 40 to 50 staff members worked on the new house through the weekend up to today. Louise Henry’s house is 16 by 20 feet, wooden, elevated about three feet off the ground and has an 8 by 5 foot addition for a bathroom.

For Hand in Hand, there is no time to rest even after having built so many houses for people across the City and country. Beto Coc, their program coordinator, tells us they have already built 288 houses countrywide but there are still 12 to 13 more to be built in the next few months.

Donations come from both local and international sources. The house was blessed and dedicated today, Sunday.
