By Aaron Humes: Cabinet has recommended that NGO Help for Progress “cease and desist” from processing applications for refugee status considerations, and that such applications must be redirected to the newly formed Refugee Eligibility Committee.
This follows a finding that the organization had and has no legal standing to accept and work on such applications.
A press release states, quote, during the few years of inactivity of the Refugee Eligibility Committee, no entity was empowered to conduct interviews to determine whether refugee applicants for refugee status had a legitimate case for consideration. End quote.
Only a well-founded and documented fear of persecution in their homelands would guarantee consideration for refugee status here.
Cabinet also requested that all applications be directed to the Department of Refugees which is housed at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Immigration Building, for recommendation by the Refugee Eligibility Committee.
