By Aaron Humes: The Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth and Sports has created a new series of phonics books for lower primary school called “My B-Z Phonics”.
Chief Education Officer Dr. Carol Babb states that literacy is such an important component of life that it is as much a responsibility to be literate as any other.
With this series, the Ministry aims to campaign for greater literacy among children and in society.
Acting Director of the Quality Assurance and Development Services, John Newport, emphasized the ease of teaching the series, including story and language structure.
He warned against what former U.S. president George W. Bush called “the soft bigotry of low expectations”: if we target each child coming out of lower division with a greater understanding of reading basics, then all will benefit.
The series will go into production for the coming school year.
Chief Executive Officer David Leacock noted that the series draws from Belizean experience and emphasizes visual effects.
But he would not discuss – due to the court’s injunction – how it compared to the BRC readers now commonly used by schools. The Ministry and BRC settled the matter by mediation last year.
