court in sessionBy Aaron Humes: Interdicted cop, Darren Evan Martinez and 25 year old Belize City resident, Steven Young, accused of the attempted murder of Lord’s Bank resident, Brandon Stevens, were each granted bail on Friday in the Supreme Court.

Martinez, a police officer of Haulze Street, Belize City, was arraigned last week on a single count of unlawful sexual assault on a minor, at the tender age of 8. Young is accused of stabbing Stevens in an altercation to the chest with an ice pick.

In the case of Martinez, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution did not raise an objection. According to Crown Counsel Sheiniza Smith, she was not aware that the victim in Martinez case was 8 and not 10 as previously reported because the age of the victim was not on the information and complaint form.

Young was set bail of $8,000. He must report to the Racoon Street police station every Friday, stay away from his accuser and avoid any communication with the victims or his family by himself or a third party which includes texting and social media.

Martinez was granted bail in the sum of $10,000 plus one surety or two sureties of $5,000 each. Martinez must report to the Mahogany Sub Formation Police Station twice a week, on Monday’s and Friday’s.

In the case of PC Martinez, he is not to go anywhere near the victim’s mother’s workplace or the child’s school which she attends.

Both men must also avoid other arrests while out on bail. Violations of bail conditions will see revocation of their bail.
