By Aaron Humes: During Friday’s press briefing in Belize City, the Belize Council of Churches, which represents the three largest Christian denominations in Belize – Roman Catholicism, Anglicanism and Methodism – and other smaller churches, revealed that it supported taking Belize and Guatemala’s territorial dispute to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
Anglican Bishop Philip Wright explained that the discussion on both sides has been dominated by opportunism and back and forth shouting and the Church hopes to be a sober voice in the debate.
As for how the Council arrived at its resolution, Bishop Wright said it had consensus among its members. Council president Reverend Roosevelt Papouloute added that while the Church does discuss these issues regularly at its meetings and dialogues with the relevant political leaders, it does not want to be too much of a nuisance by proclaiming its position publicly on a regular basis.
Meanwhile, the leader of Belize Chinese Christian Community, Fred Shyu, said that in the case of the Asian community, more education is needed, but they welcome an opportunity to join the debate and pray for the country.
The National Evangelical Association of Belize, which split from the Belize Association of Evangelical Churches last year, has held its own Day of Prayer earlier this month.
