BY Aaron Humes: With his victory in Sunday’s party convention in Belize City, new 1st deputy leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), Patrick Faber will next week Tuesday officially replace Gaspar Vega as deputy Prime Minister of Belize.
This must be done by means of entry in the Government Gazette.
But does that unsettle supporters of the beaten John Saldivar?
There were suggestions this morning that some Government ministers were meeting at the home of the Belmopan area representative and that they would make demands of the prime minister to keep Honorable Gaspar Vega as Deputy Prime Minister among other things. He stands down at the close of the current term of office.
Faber won Sunday’s vote handily, but Saldivar had the support of 13 area representatives while Faber only had the support of 3.
While their colleagues chose to keep their own counsel, both men insist on record that no such demands were made and the party remains united.
But the road to unity may not be so easy as Faber told us based on what transpired after the regular business of Cabinet, where he said that a few Cabinet colleagues who supported Saldivar were slow with their congratulations.
Faber thus has the tough task of restoring hurt feelings and has met with Prime Minister Barrow, following which there was a frank discussion within Cabinet about the convention in which “some healing happened,” as Faber states.
