By Aaron Humes: The siltation problem at the mouth of the Haulover Creek, especially near Southern Foreshore, is getting worse. Today reports were that a boat got stuck momentarily.
When we last spoke to Belize City Mayor Darrell Bradley about it, there was a dredge in place to start work but there was no money available. That’s still the case, but there is interest in getting the work done.
The Mayor reiterated that Government needs to get involved as a major part of getting the work done to clean up the creek from mouth to city boundaries at the Haulover Bridge.
Meanwhile, the Mayor would also like Government to look at a plan for expanding the sewer system in the Old Capital and connecting all residents to avoid spillage into the Haulover Creek. The Council has done some work in this regard but the problem is far too big for City Hall.
According to the Mayor Belize Water Services Limited said it did not have the kind of budget needed at the time when the Council started its city-wide infrastructure upgrade, and they could not get the kind of resources from the Municipal Bond that would be needed to do a full fix. He noted that sewerage will become a greater problem for the City beyond his term in office.
In other municipal news: After a bit of back and forth with the Ministry of Works over whom would assume responsibility for concreting the Cinderella Plaza and unfinished portions of Kelly Street and Baymen Avenue on Northside, the City Council has almost completed the work.
But the Council wants to add a flourish to the important intersection. Mayor Darrell Bradley says the council will provide space for two vendors, some greenery and a sign welcoming motorists and pedestrians to the Plaza, with a little history lesson.
The Council’s latest round of street works also includes completions to Queen Street and University Drive. Work is to begin on the completion of East and West Canal; all of Dolphin Drive and St. Joseph Street; and a portion of Fabers’ Road west of Central American Boulevard; the Council also continues to source finances for fixes to other streets.
