By Dalila Ical.: Village Council elections started on Sunday June 5th and in the north, the United Democratic Party (UDP) won in nine of 12 villages in the first round of elections.
In the Corozal District the People’s United Party (PUP) registered “huge” victories in Ranchito and San Joaquin villages, both considered strongholds of the party. 
In Calcutta Village, residents elected a split council. Leading them for the next three years is Matias Casanova who ran independent. The rest of the council was split between UDP and PUP.
In San Pedro Village, the election was held only for the chairmanship of the council where Carlos Cobb of the UDP won. The rest of the UDP slate was uncontested.
The UDP also won in Cristo Rey Village while the UDP slates in Carolina and Yo Chen Villages were uncontested.
In the Orange Walk District, the UDP won in Santa Cruz Village. BBN understands that the PUP fell short of seven votes for the Chairmanship but managed to have one candidate, Elsie Dias winning a seat on the Council.
The PUP also lost to the UDP in San Antonio and Trinidad Villages. They came close to the chairmanship but lost by nine votes in San Antonio and by about 40 votes in Trinidad. In San Lazaro Village the PUP won the Chairmanship and two councillor seats but the majority votes went to the UDP.
In Tower Hill, BBN understands that the PUP did not contest that area but two UDP slates contested the election there.
