By Aaron Humes: A Belize City man who is accused of gun play on Mopan Street, Belize City in broad daylight yesterday evening at around 4:48 p.m., was today arraigned in the Belize City Magistrate’s AlstonCourt on a single charge of aggravated assault with a  deadly weapon, to wit, a firearm.

He is 24 year old Alston Leon Smith, a labourer of Banak Street, Belize City, accused of firing on a 17 year old minor, identified as Selvin Joseph Linarez.

Smith appeared before Magistrate Emmerita Anderson and pleaded not guilty.

However, due to the nature of the offense, which is alleged to have occurred with a firearm, no bail could be granted at this time at the lower court to Smith and he was remanded into custody at the Belize Central Prison until August 11, 2016.

Linarez and his 27 year old sister reported that he was standing in front of his house at Ebony Street, when he was approached by a dark skin male person, slim built, about six feet in height with dread plats on his head whom  he recognized as Alston Smith.

According to Linarez, he saw Smith push his hand into the right side of his pants and attempted to pull out something which caught his attention and he began to run from Smith who then set chase behind him and whilst running, on Mopan Street, heading towards Vernon Street, he turned around and saw Smith pointing a chrome object resembling a 9mm pistol and  fired several shots after him which missed him.

The 17 year old said he managed to reach Vernon Street where he got assistance from the police who were posted at the Police checkpoint.
