By Aaron Humes: For the next three days, mental health workers will be learning about tackling traumatic experiences in children.
Life for the youngest of us is not as innocent as yesteryear, with frequent exposure, inadvertent or not, to trauma ranging from sexual and other abuse to gun violence to depressive/suicide episodes among many other stressors.
Acting Coordinator for Belize’s national mental health program, Nurse Eleanor Bennett, says it is wrong for adults to believe that children can bounce back from every bad thing that may happen to them – at least not without some help.
Local workers will be expected to formulate means of reaching out to affected families and children, particularly those handled by the Department of Human Services.
