By Aaron Humes: Police have charged 38 year old unemployed Derick Garbutt for the reported burglary of Spoonaz’s Photo, Café and Bar on North Front Street on May 31, which was caught on surveillance camera.
Appearing on Monday evening before Magistrate Emmerita Anderson, Garbutt pleaded not guilty and was remanded following strong objections to bail.
Garbutt is accused of breaking into Spoonaz’s, owned by photographer Jeremy Spooner, and taking various liquors and a pellet gun, for a total value of $1,750, property of his son, Frank.
In objecting to bail the court prosecutor cited the ongoing police investigation; a possibility he may interfere with witnesses in the case and a high possibility that he may not show up for trial.
Magistrate Emmerita Anderson agreed and remanded Garbutt to the Belize Central Prison until August 25, 2016. He is presently serving a 90-day sentence for a conviction of common assault.
The incident allegedly took place between 5:30 p.m., on Monday, May 30, 2016 and 11:00 a.m., on Tuesday, May 31.
