The Garifuna community is mourning the passing of former president of the National Garifuna Council, Ernest Castro, who collapsed and later died at his home in Belmopan on Monday morning, after apparently suffering a massive heart attack following a morning walk.
The NGC’s current president, Sandra Miranda, who was a neighbour of his, stated: He is well known. He has done several works in the Garifuna communities, he loves his culture. He had two terms of president and in his presidency his interest was to demarcate the Garifuna communities. I think he did work on Hopkins. He had two terms and two years and he started that in his second term and the next president will see that that is completed.
The funeral takes place on Saturday in Castro’s native Punta Gorda Town at St. Peter Claver Church. He leaves to mourn his wife, children and other relatives. Castro also owned his own auditing firm in Belmopan. The NGC extends condolences to his family and friends and the larger Garifuna community.
