Belize shock Brazil 106-102 at FIBA U18 AmeriCup on Monday in Argentina

By Rubén Morales Iglesias:Led by captain captain Douglas Langford and power forward Josiah Moseley, Belize stunned Brazil 106-102 in their opening game in the FIBA Under 18 Americas Cup on Monday at the Estadio Obras Sanitarias in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Under the tutelage of coach Matthew Smiling, Moseley scored 31 points while Langford netted 28 in Belize best showing ever in international competition at the U18 level. Moseley added eight rebounds and two assists while Langford added nine rebounds and two assists.

Elijah Favela, who scored the final two free throws, totalled 14 points. Ian Parham also hit 14 points, Elijah Favela contributed 12 points, Wilford Dawson added ten, and Devin Moddy scored seven with seven rebounds.

Brazil rallied down the stretch but Belize was able to maintain the lead to the final whistle.

Nolan Junior Kemm led Brazil with 19 points, Matheus Monteiro netted 16, and Thaylor Dos Santos added 15.

Later today, in the other Group B game, hosts Argentina take on the United States at 5:10 pm (8:10 pm Argentina time) on Monday.

In Group A, Centrobasket subchampions Dominican Republic beat Canada 79-77 while Centrobasket champions Puerto Rico fell to Venezuela 80-69.

Next, Belize will then take on the most powerful opponents, the United States, on Tuesday, June 4 at 2:40 pm (5:40 pm Argentina time). Belize will close group play against Argentina on Wednesday, June 5, at 5:10 pm (8:10 pm Argentina time).
