By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: World Environment Day is celebrated annually on June 5.

This year’s theme is “Land restoration, desertification and drought resilience.”

The Belize Audubon Society noted that today, a collaborative tree-planting event took place at Guanacaste National Park and 17 trees were planted in areas recently ravaged by forest fires, as part of a coordinated effort to replenish the park’s ecosystem.

Students from Belmopan Methodist High School, staff members from the Department of Environment, Dr. Pio Saqui from the University of Belize, and Amanda Acosta, Executive Director of the Belize Audubon Society, participated in this reforestation initiative.

They planted a variety of species including Cohune, Mahogany, Rain, and Guanacaste trees.

“The participation of diverse groups in this initiative highlights the community’s commitment to environmental stewardship,” said BAS’ Amanda Acosta.

“Each tree planted today represents a step towards recovery and a greener future and while the drought poses challenges, the dedication shown today shows our commitment to nurturing these new trees until the rains return.”

The park rangers at Guanacaste National Park will be responsible for the care of the newly planted trees, ensuring they receive adequate attention until the rainy season begins.

Guanacaste National Park, a 50-acre protected area near Belmopan, is known for its rich biodiversity and significant natural resources.

The park is named after the Guanacaste tree (Enterolobium cyclocarpum), an emblematic species of the region, recognized for its massive size and distinctive ear-shaped seed pods.
