By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On June 7, 2024, residents of Santa Familia, Billy White, and Duck Run 3 in Western Belize received new shelters just in time for the upcoming hurricane season.
These shelters, vital for providing refuge during extreme weather events, mark a significant step in bolstering the region’s resilience against natural disasters.
Santa Familia and Duck Run 3 welcomed newly constructed buildings designed specifically to withstand the rigors of hurricane-force winds and heavy rainfall.
Meanwhile, in Billy White, existing facilities underwent extensive renovations to meet the stringent standards required for hurricane shelters.
The implementation of these shelters is part of the “Building Climate Resilience and Social Integration of Displaced Peoples in Settlements of Western Belize Project.”
This initiative, a collaborative effort between the Government of Belize (GOB) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), has received crucial financial backing from the European Union amounting to US$2.6 million.
The partnership between GOB, IOM, and the European Union underscores the commitment to safeguarding vulnerable communities and enhancing their ability to withstand the impacts of climate change. By providing secure shelters, the project aims to mitigate the risks posed by natural disasters and ensure the safety and well-being of residents in these areas.
As construction nears completion for a polyclinic and a new hurricane shelter in Duck Run 1, anticipation grows for the additional infrastructure that will further fortify the region’s resilience against future environmental challenges.
