By Aaron Humes: The 17th Central American Seniors Championship in Athletics was hosted in San Salvador, El Salvador over the weekend at the Jorge “Magico” Gonzalez Stadium.
Belize’s 30-member delegation captured 12 medals – six gold, four silver and two bronze. They also set six records at the event, almost half of the total 13 set, and now hold seven Central American records.
According to head of delegation Deon Sutherland, gold medalists included former Olympian Kaina Martinez, who lowered her 100-metre record by nearly three-tenths of a second from 11.74 to 11.56 seconds; Tricia Flores set a new record in long jump; Itohan Aikhionbare in shot put; Brandon Jones in triple jump; Katy Sealy in heptathlon; and the 4 by 100 meter relay team consisting of Martinez, Flores, Faith Morris and Samantha Dirks went under 47 seconds.
Alexis Neal placed second in the 100 m hurdles but posted a record 15.08 seconds; Martinez was second in the 200 meters at 23.68 seconds; Itohan Aikhionbare placed second in discus with a 47.4 meter throw, and the men’s 4 by 100 meter team consisting of James Bregal, Brandon Jones, Shaun Gill and Mark Anderson came second with a 42.13 second run.
Bringing home bronze were Shaun Gill in men’s 100 meters at 10.97 seconds and Ashantie Carr in triple jump, with 12.04 meters. Other notable athletes were Ashontie Carr in 800 meters; Bret Scheve in 400 meter hurdles; and Kenneth Brackett in men’s long jump.
