By Aaron Humes: “If they think that I’m going to be perturbed or intimidated by their actions, then they have the wrong man.”
So said Commissioner of Police Chester Williams to reporters this afternoon following a harrowing night for his son at his residence in Belmopan, which was visited by an armed attacker. The shooter drove by the house and fired from a distance away – an act of a “coward” according to the Commissioner, who surmised that he must have known he was not at home.
The veteran cop vowed that those responsible would be pursued, apprehended, and brought to justice and reminded that he was sworn to protect the nation.
Already, a suspect is in custody and at least one other person is being sought, and the suspected weapon used, a .45 caliber firearm, was recovered. The man in custody, whose mother works at the Police Training Academy, has been in trouble before and the Commissioner suggested that his “close associate,” a resident of Camalote, Cayo District, may have been the one to set him up. He dismissed any personal grievance as a potential motive, framing the attack as a “message” sent to him and to the Department he leads.
The Commissioner is in New York City for a United Nations-sponsored conference of police chiefs and said he was messaged by his son during the incident while on the airplane (he had data on his phone for messages, not calls) which he forwarded to Belmopan Police, following which police responded. The shells recovered from the scene were .45 caliber – prohibited and dangerous. The Commissioner revealed that illegal and prohibited weapons are being smuggled through the Western Border although, in at least the last two weeks, five such weapons were taken off the streets.
ComPol Williams said he put his faith in his fellows to respond quickly and adequately which they did, and commended his son’s bravery in the face of danger, saying he was confident that his son was able to follow instructions and avert the threat.
