Kadeem Babb murder at Sadie Vernon Technical ‘not gang-related,’ Commissioner of Police says

By Aaron Humes: Police investigating the shooting death of a Belize City man have so far ruled out gang involvement, saying they believe a personal issue was at fault.

The ongoing investigation follows police responding to a report at Sadie Vernon Technical High School in Belize City this morning, Wednesday, at about 7:45 a.m. Upon arrival, they observed the motionless body of 28-year-old Kadeem Egbert Babb, a security guard of Belize City, with gunshot injuries to his body.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the body of Babb was discovered around 7:30 a.m. today. The body of Kadeem Babb was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where it was pronounced dead on arrival and now awaits a post-mortem examination.

Commissioner of Police Chester Williams refuted early reports of gang involvement: “From what we have been made to understand is that there may have been some issue between [Babb] and another individual, which is not gang-related, because I already see some comments stating that, oh, we have S.O.E. and this is happening, but the murder is not gang-related. And the police have obtained surveillance footage from the school. We’re viewing [that] footage now; hopefully, we’ll be able to identify who the individual is and should be able to make an arrest.”

As for whether the incident could have been prevented, it appears the killer was a step ahead, he added: “It’s not a stone’s throw away from the police station, as some media hosts have reported. It is still quite a distance from the police station. And yes, as I said before, we do have police officers in the Martin’s area working, but the police officers have to move around. They cannot stay in one given area, and criminals will take advantage of whatever opportunity they may have. And the fact that it was not, it is not something gang-motivated. [If] you have an issue with somebody, you go after the person where the person works. I don’t see how it is going to be possible for the police to be able to deter that from happening unless the police would have had prior knowledge that there was some issue between him and this individual and this person would have been going after him to do him something.”

The Commissioner noted that police had made arrests in three recent murders, investigating to the best of their ability, and he expressed confidence that this killer too would be apprehended.

Until then, police investigations continue.
