By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Council, under the Ministry of Human Development, Families and Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, launched its new Anti-Trafficking Strategy.
The new strategy is the result of an extensive review of Belize’s efforts to combat human trafficking, as well as new information emerging from international best practices and lessons learned by local officials on the anti-trafficking frontlines.
This strategy is built on 4 main pillars: prevention, protection, prosecution, and partnership.
The Ministry said that for each pillar, there are targeted interventions that the council intends to achieve, with a specific focus on results-based management.
Earlier this week, the US State Department published its 2024 Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report, and Belize maintained its tier 2 status.
The report acknowledges Belize’s substantial efforts to comply with the minimum standards for eliminating trafficking.
