UEFA Euro 2024: Spain through to Semifinals on 2-1 agonizing extra-time win over Germany

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Spain stunned Germany with a last-minute extra time goal to win the first Quarterfinal of the UEFA European Championship (EURO2024) by a 2-1 score at the Stuttgart Arena in Stuttgart, Germany, advancing to the Semifinals.

Mikel Merino landed the winning goal in the 119^th minute with a header that beat German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, setting off a jubilant celebration in all of Spain.

Spain had taken the lead in the 51^st minute. Entering the penalty box from the right side, youth sensation Lamine Yamal crossed to incoming Dani Olmo, who blasted a low shot to the Neuer’s right, shaking the net for the 1-0 lead.

Germany levelled the score at 1-1 in the 89^th minute with a right-foot smack by midfielder Florian Wirtz that bounced off the post and trickled into the goal. Wirtz’s goal sent the game into extra time and for a while it appeared that the match would be extended in a penalty shootout. But Merino’s goal finished off Germany, who will now have to watch the rest of the tournament from the stands.

In the Semifinals, Spain will play the winners of the Portugal-France match, which is scheduled for 1:00 pm on Friday.

The Quarterfinals will be completed with England facing Switzerland at 10:00 am and the Netherlands taking on Türkiye at 1:00 pm.
