Mateo Cruz GoFundMe account seeks to raise US$35,000 for former elite Belizean cyclist

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The daughter of former elite Belizean cyclist Mateo Cruz, Chloe Alexis, has set up a GoFundMe account with the intent of raising US$35,000 to assist with her father’s medical expenses. Mateo is in need of daily dialysis after being diagnosed with cirrhosis and renal failure.

He underwent his first dialysis on Monday night at Belize Healthcare Partners in Belize City, where he was transferred from the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.

“My father Mateo Cruz who was one of Belize’s formidable elite Cyclists for 18 years has fallen ill and … is currently fighting for his life at the Belize Healthcare Partners Limited,” Chloe Alexis wrote in the GoFundMe account.

“Mateo underwent his first dialysis session there last night July 8th 2024 and is scheduled to receive dialysis daily until he returns to a more stable condition where it will be reduced to three time a week.

“The daily medical expense ranges from $3,000.00 USD to $5,000.00 USD.”

Chloe Alexis said the funds received will be used to defray the cost of the dialysis, hospitalization, and any other treatment Mateo may need to restore him back to good health.

As of 11:00 am on Wednesday, July 10, 16 donations had raised US$1,180. Well-known foreign cyclists Gustavo Carrillo and Bill Elliston had donated US$250 and $200, respectively.

On Tuesday, Mateo’s sister Penny Cruz made a plea for blood donations for Mateo. Cruz said the former cyclist needed four pints of blood at the blood bank in Belize City.

Mateo’s family is also organizing a barbeque fundraiser on Saturday, July 13, in Belmopan to further assist with the medical expenses. Deliveries can be made in Roaring Creek, Belmopan, and Camalote.
